The Association of Residential Letting Agents:
The Association of Residential Lettings Agents (ARLA) was formed in 1981 as the professional and regulatory body for letting agents in the UK. It was recognised that the requirements of the residential lettings market were so detailed and specific that a separate organisation was required to promote standards in this important and growing sector of the property market.
ARLA has 1,800 member offices throughout the UK including large multi-branch national companies, as well as the smaller single office practices. Membership is achieved only by agents who demonstrate that they have a thorough knowledge of their profession and that they conduct their business according to current best management practice.
All members are required to have professional indemnity insurance cover. In addition, they are covered by a bonding scheme which provides financial protection for client monies which have been misappropriated.
ARLA members are governed by the Code of Practice providing a framework of ethical and professional standards at a level far higher than the law demands.
The Tenancy Dispute Service:
The Tenancy Dispute Service is an independent, not-for-profit company established in 2003 to resolve complaints and disputes arising in the private rented sector speedily, cost-effectively and fairly. As well as running the Tenancy Deposit Scheme, the company deals with complaints against members of The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA).
The Dispute Service also runs a similar scheme, under the auspices of the Ombudsman for Estate Agents, for its members who undertake lettings.

What's it all about?
The Ombudsman for Estate Agents scheme provides an independent and impartial facility for the resolution of complaints between:
- People who buy, sell or let property and the agents they deal with.
- It can make awards of compensation where relevant.
- The service is free to the public.
- Member agents comply with a strict Code of Practice.
The Consumers, Estate Agents and Redress Act:
The Consumers, Estate Agents and Redress Act makes it mandatory for all Estate Agents to be a member of an approved Redress Scheme.
- Complete is a member of the Ombudsman's approved Redress Scheme.
The Hampshire Association of Estate Agents:
The Hampshire Association of Estate Agents (HAEA) was formed in 2008 when the senior partners of the leading firms of Estate Agents in Hampshire saw the need to share Best Practice & Knowledge.
Since its inception the rules, guidelines and working practices have been subject to review in line with legislation and changing times, but in essence the same principles and aims remain today.
These are to:
- Promote and maintain the highest professional standards
- Foster relationships with other professional bodies
- Encourage a high ethical standard of practice combined with commercial experience
